If aesthetics are your main concern, go with hardwoods. Nothing matches the sheer beauty of natural cherry or oak floors. But if your budget is a concern, you might want to consider laminate, which is made from a wood composite material formed under high heat and pressure. The material is finished with a faux wood-grain to imitate the looks of the real thing. Many laminate products look so real that your guests won’t even know it’s not a hardwood product. Another thing to consider when browsing our Chicago hardwood flooring showroom is durability. If properly cared for, hardwood can last a long time, but even the hardest wooden floors are susceptible to scratches from furniture, scuffs from foot traffic, and damage from moisture. Laminate flooring is much more resistant to scratches and nicks than the real thing, since it’s made from a dense composite of pressed particles. Because laminate flooring is more moisture-resistant, it is a better choice for basements, and may stand up better in the long run in humid climates. Laminate is also easier to clean than real hardwood.

Although laminate flooring may be more durable than hardwood, it is harder to repair. If a hardwood floor is severely scratched up, faded, or otherwise damaged, it can always be sanded down and refinished. A hardwood floor that is 40 years old can look as good as new after such a treatment. In general, laminate floors are harder to repair, and they cannot be made to look brand new like wood floors can. Some laminate floors can be disassembled so that individual pieces can be replaced if necessary, but there is no guarantee that the finishes will match perfectly. Even if you buy exactly the same laminate product, different dye lots may have slightly different appearances. Also, sunlight will gradually fade the color of your floors, so new pieces will stand out.

Porcelain tile is similar to ceramic tile in its uses and functionality, only it is much denser. Its manufacturing process, which produces this extra hardness, makes it less likely to chip, better able to withstand everyday use without showing signs of wear, and is essential to the timeless, chic, modern look that has made it so popular for kitchen and bathroom renovations. It is during the process of firing porcelain tile that manufacturers have the opportunity to create countless designs with color and texture.  This modern look, durability, and versatility mean that updating a home in Chicago with porcelain tile will not only make it more enjoyable for those who live in it, but will also increase the home’s value, which has a number of benefits.

The process of creating harder, more varied and stylish tiles also has a few drawbacks. Porcelain tile costs more per square foot, and for many homeowners its added durability is not strictly necessary, as even the most heavily trafficked areas of the home would be served perfectly well with some other high-quality ceramic tile. Porcelain tiles also require a slightly different installation process, as they have less absorption than standard tiles, and if installed incorrectly they won’t resist the elements or breakage as well as they should. One of the best options is to use a non-flammable dry cleaning solvent or spot removal solution. When using a solvent, be careful not to pour it directly onto the carpet. Instead, apply the solvent with a clean cloth, sponge, or gentle brush. If the solvent reaches the backing of the carpet, it can damage the latex that connects the primary and secondary backings, so exercise caution. There are several acceptable solvents out there, including Capture, a brand that we carry at Home Carpet One.

If you don’t have a solvent on hand, you can use a solution of liquid dishwashing detergent and water. Use one cup of warm water and no more than a quarter teaspoon of detergent. Using a stronger concentration can damage your carpet. Never use bleach detergents designed for automatic dishwashers, as these will almost certainly leave permanent stains and can destroy fibers. Also avoid laundry detergents. Although it may seem sensible to use laundry detergent on carpet, these detergents often contain fluorescent dyes than can dye the carpet fibers. If you do use a detergent solution, rinse the area thoroughly afterward to remove potentially harmful detergent residues.

Another option is to use a solution of one part white vinegar to two parts of warm water. This simple solution is generally effective and is less likely to cause color changes than other common solutions such as ammonia solutions. If none of these methods solves your problem, you can always call a Chicago carpet cleaning professional. Professional cleaners have specialized equipment and powerful cleaning products that can remove stains too stubborn for conventional methods. As with any stain, chocolate stains can become more stubborn with time. If you aren’t successful in removing the stain yourself, do not hesitate to bring in the big guns as soon as possible.
