One of the most important things to understand about carpet is that most carpets are made of one of four primary fibers: wool, nylon, polypropylene (also called olefin) and wool blends. These fibers are fine, thread-like materials that are made into a yarn and then woven or tufted into the carpet textiles that you see everywhere. Understanding the differences between these main types of fibers is key to knowing which kind of carpet is right for you.

The most popular choice for residential Chicago carpet is wool. Wool carpet is naturally durable and long-lasting, thanks to the unique protein structures of the sheep hair that makes up the fibers. Wool carpeting is an environmentally-friendly choice that is

non-allergenic and its natural properties provide inherent fire resistance, air purification and moisture control, creating an exceptionally safe and healthy indoor environment.  The options for color, pattern, and texture are limitless with wool.

Another popular fiber is Nylon, which was first introduced in 1938 by the prolific materials science company DuPont. A petrochemical synthetic fiber made from carbon, nitrogen, oxygen and hydrogen, nylon has excellent soil-resistant properties, especially when a special stain-resisting treatment has been applied. After professional cleaning, nylon carpet can look like new even years down the road, thanks to the unique properties of treated nylon fibers. Many Chicago carpet customers go for a blend of wool and nylon, usually composed of roughly 80 percent of the former and 20 percent of the latter. Wool blendes tend to offer the best of both worlds – the superior strength of wool and the superior stain resistance of treated nylon. Other blends may also include polyester or acrylic materials.

Popular since the 1950s, polypropylene or olefin yarns have become the fastest-growing material on the Chicago carpet scene in recent years. These fibers offer good resistance to moisture, stains, and color fading. Polypropylene also represents an exceptional value for commercial or residential carpeting, costing much less than wool in most cases. The yarns are made in a wide variety of deniers, allowing a broad selection of aesthetic options.

Carpet installation may seem like a relatively simple job, because unlike tile or hardwood jobs, a carpet installation doesn’t require dealing with lots of small, intricately-laid-out pieces. But in many ways, installing carpet is actually even trickier than other flooring jobs, and should be left to professionals if you want to protect your investment. The simple fact that carpet is sold by the roll starts to present challenges right away.  Making sure you have ordered the right size roll of carpet may sometimes seem easier than it really is.  Getting a roll of carpet that seems to be the right size can be harder than it seems unless your room is square or rectangular.  You need to think about the shape of the room, corners, closets, and small areas that may also need to be finished that sometimes get overlooked.

The first time you try loading a massive roll of carpet into the backseat of a car, you’ll begin to understand that a tidy carton of tile actually seems much more manageable in comparison. Once you get the carpet inside, you’ll have to try to handle, measure, and cut those unwieldy rolls into the exact shapes and sizes that your room requires. Chances are, you’ll need to lay multiple pieces, which will need to abut each other extremely closely, and then you’ll have to disguise the seams. This process requires a great deal of specialized tools, some of which you’ll need to buy, some of which you’ll need to rent. If you’re not the kind of person who has a power stretcher, an industrial seam roller, and a seaming iron lying around the garage, you probably don’t want to jump into a DIY carpet installation.

Lastly, installing carpet is extremely hard on your knees and your back, and it takes at least a few people to get the job done. Unfortunately, if you don’t get it right the first time, it is very easy to see where mistakes were made, and a botched carpet job can be difficult and expensive to fix. Unless you’ve done a carpet installation before and you really know what you’re getting yourself into, you’re better off leaving it to the pros.

Sound is transmitted by the vibration of air molecules. So, if you are surrounded by hard surfaces, any sound is reflected back into the room. Carpets, on the other hand, are extremely effective sound absorbers because the individual fibers, piles tufts and underlay have different resonant frequencies at which they absorb sound. In this respect, wool carpets are extremely effective, as the millions of wool fibers in an area of carpet have a range of lengths, diameters, crimps and spirality, which enables them to absorb sounds over a wider range of frequencies.

Typically, carpets can reduce airborne noise by 35%; however, tests of wool carpets of varying constructions produced an average noise reduction of 46%. With underlay, reductions of 50% to 70% were achieved. It is important to note that sound absorption will be lower if the carpet backing is too impermeable. The ultimate combination for noise absorption is a wool carpet with a wool underlay. Also, cut-pile carpet will absorb more than loop, because of the more open nature of its surface.

In addition to verbal noise we also generate surface noise. Surface noise in a room is the sound from footsteps, dropped objects and furniture movement. Bare tile floors produce 7-12 times more surface noise than carpets, which cushion the impact of the noise, absorbing and deadening the sound. This type of noise control is particularly important in busy restaurants and other locations where people need to be able to communicate amidst a lot of activity.

Overall, by reducing the noise levels and reverberation times, wool carpet improves a room’s acoustics, whether it is in a public facility or your home. Background noises disappear; speech comprehensibility increases and occupants automatically speak in a softer, more relaxed voice, rather than generating even more noise by trying to makes themselves heard above the sound around them.
