As the leading Chicago hardwood flooring dealer and installer, Home Carpet One knows that hardwoods are simply never going out of style. They’ve been around for hundreds of years, and yet hardwood floors remain not only the most sought-after but also the most valued luxury material in homes around the world. Now more than ever, there is an exceptional selection of hardwood flooring options, from eco-friendly bamboo flooring to classic options like cherry wood. Although real hardwoods are more expensive than other options such as laminate flooring, they will provide decades of quality, value and that comforting x-factor that other surfaces simply can’t match. And because hardwood floors can be refinished down the line, they retain value and offer the chance to appear brand new over and over again.

Whether you appreciate classic aesthetics or contemporary style, there is a hardwood flooring product perfect for your home’s unique look. From hand-scraped reclaimed oak to polished engineered bamboo, hardwood floors can be as rustic or as chic as your style demands. Either way, hardwood floors provide a timeless appeal that no other floor covering can match. Can you imagine purchasing carpeting that will still be beautiful and stylish 30 years from now? As much as we love high quality carpeting, everyone knows that carpet will eventually need to be replaced. With hardwoods, you get lasting value and old-world quality that you can enjoy for as long as you stay in your home. And should you decide to sell down the road, hardwood floors provide an increase in your home’s value, so you get a return on your investment even years later.

Unlike carpeting, hardwood floors are easily maintained, and do not trap allergens such as dust and pet dander. Hardwood floors also do not absorb odors, so your family enjoys high indoor air quality and a cleaner, more pleasant home. There is no better way to add elegance and value to your home. To learn more about how hardwood floors can transform your home, call the Chicago hardwood flooring experts at Home Carpet One today.

As the leading provider of eco-friendly flooring in Chicago, we know that homeowners don’t want to sacrifice style or quality to stay green, and we don’t think you should have to! That’s why we’re proud to offer bamboo flooring that is as beautiful and luxurious as it is environmentally-friendly. One of the reasons green flooring has become so popular is that it offers a no-compromise solution for homeowners. And when it comes to combining style and eco-friendliness, bamboo is the way to go.

What makes bamboo so different from regular hardwood? Traditional hardwood flooring requires cutting down hardwood trees such as oak, maple, and walnut, which take decades to mature. Once they are cut down, these trees must be re-grown from scratch, and it will be at least 50 years before the trees reach the maturity needed for lumber harvesting. Bamboo flooring provides the same luxurious look and feel as hardwood flooring, but bamboo is actually a grass rather than a hardwood, so the harvesting process is much more sustainable. Bamboo matures in just five to seven years, and when it is harvested, the roots and lower portion of the stalks remain in tact. It is just like mowing the grass in your front yard – the plants don’t die, they just continue to grow. After bamboo is harvested from a plant, that plant continues to grow, and will produce another full crop in only 3 to 5 years! This makes bamboo one of the fastest-growing plants in the world, and an easily renewable resource. And because the plants never die, the eco-systems in which bamboo is grown aren’t harmed by the harvesting process the way logging destroys forests.

Of course, bamboo’s eco-friendliness wouldn’t go very far if homeowners weren’t impressed by the quality of bamboo flooring. Bamboo has a tensile strength comparable to that of steel, making it much harder than traditional hardwoods. It is also more dimensionally stable, meaning it will not expand and contract as much as regular wood when exposed to variations in temperature and humidity. And of course, this eco-friendly flooring is absolutely beautiful, and available in a variety of gorgeous finishes.

Pre-finished Natural CORK flooring offers a variety of patterns, colors, and densities. Though CORK encompasses only a small fraction of the total floor covering market, there has been a surge in popularity since the shift to recycled products has changed the course of the flooring industry. Today, buyers are much more discerning in their quest for the right product, thus selecting floor coverings that offer the most benefits. Pre-finished Natural CORK flooring comes with 5 coats of Acrylic finish. The Acrylic finish is UV cured and does not contain formaldehyde which can produce toxic gases when combustion occurs. Also CORK offers superior acoustical insulation making it the perfect choice for areas where sound abatement is required. Moreover, due to the composition of CORK flooring, it provides a comfortable cushion to walk on. This directly translates into fewer back, knee and joint related stresses. CORK is also highly resilient, making typical indentations left by furniture or other heavy objects less noticeable compared to wood, carpet or vinyl floor coverings.

Natural CORK is available in 2 types of installations. There are glue-down and floating systems, each having it’s advantages. Floating CORK floors are not attached to a substrate and function as a single unit as all panels are securely adjoined. These systems can be installed in either residential or commercial settings and offer an economical approach as the necessity for adhesive is not present. The planks simply inter-lock as any floating floor would and feature JointShield edge sealing for added protection. This moisture protection system enables the cork floor to wear better in the presence of water giving the edges of the panels watertight capabilities. However, it should be noted, wet mopping is highly discouraged and any spills should be cleaned up right away. Regular maintenance simply requires routine sweeping and vacuuming to avoid the build up of abrasive particles.

The other type of installation involves glue down cork tiles. With this type of installation, the installer can create intricate borders and patterns. These systems are available for residential and commercial applications though the appropriate underlayment must be present. This helps avoid compromising the bonding capabilities between the cork and substrate it is being attached to. Though the floating panels are typically denser than the glue-down, it should be noted these glue-down tiles are formulated to flex under pressure. A higher density will yield less indentations and aid in reducing the daily wear and tear any floor covering sustains.

Stop by Home Carpet One in the heart of Lakeview to view the cork options we have available.

When selecting a new hardwood floor for your home, there can be some uncertainty and anxiety when confronted with all of the choices. With new technology available, there are beautiful engineered hardwood flooring systems that satisfy even the most discerning buyers. There are three different types of installations regarding an engineered hardwood. Each has its advantages and disadvantages, yet all three have a wide spectrum of species and stains. In the following, I will discuss the three types, and moreover, how each system is different than the next.

The first type of installation is called “floating”. This simply means the floor is interlocked with itself and at no point attached to a sub floor. Many laminate flooring systems such as Pergo pioneered this type of installation. Thus over the years, floating systems were developed that are today widely used by developers in residential new-construction settings. Floating floors are great for folks who are concerned about raising the overall floor height, or simply want to avoid the necessity of plywood. These types of installations require a moisture barrier and at times, a form of sound abatement. They are usually the most economical choice as glue and the additional labor associated with nail/glue installations are not factors. One disadvantage of this type of installation is the fact the floor does move when walked on. This is not a defect and is inherent in these installations. Also when making a repair to these floors, it is not uncommon to remove a large selection of flooring to exchange a single board. Home Carpet One stocks a wide spectrum of floating floors, giving our customers countless options for their next flooring project.

The second type of installation is a glue down flooring system. Here, the hardwood is engineered to be glued to a substrate. These types of floors are great for customers who want the look and feel of a solid hardwood installation and not the simulated appearance often found in floating installations. They are typically thinner than nail down and floating hardwoods and have varying wear layers giving the purchaser the option to refinish depending on the product selected. Glue down installations can be slightly more expensive than floating systems. Again, one must purchase a moisture barrier and a potential form of sound abatement if required. Here, the under-layments must be glued and not simply rolled out as a floating system would require. The process for repairing these floors is quite simple due to the fact a single plank can be removed and exchanged without disturbing the surrounding planks.

The final type of installation is a nail-down floor. These floors tend to be the most costly due to the sub floor requirements and the nature of the product itself. Some of these types of engineered hardwoods are solid wood and some are products with plywood construction and a heavy wear layer. In either case, most nail down installations can be refinished multiple times thus giving the customer added confidence in the event a repair was necessary. Typically, there needs to be ¾ of an inch of solid plywood to nail into. Also, it is not uncommon to have nail-down installations be limited to on or above grade depending on product selection.

In summation, all of these types of installations require the proper acclimation of the product and all guidelines be adhered to. Engineered products have become a great alternative to the standard unfinished wood that needs to be site finished. There are countless options and types available to fit each and every budget!

We all know winter is fast approaching. With this in mind, safeguarding one’s hardwood floor in Chicago becomes of paramount importance. During winter months, hardwood floors tend to contract causing unsightly gaps. These gaps can undermine the overall appearance of your floor. To alleviate this, the ambient temperature and humidity should be monitored. The ideal temperature would be between 65 and 75 degrees Fahrenheit and the humidity should be around 50%. This range of temperature and humidity represent an equilibrium that minimizes the impact of climatic changes. While engineered hardwood floors, like Kahrs hardwood, are more dimensionally stable than solid hardwood floors, it is still important to monitor humidity and temperature with those floors as well. In the event that you cannot control your humidity through your air system, you should purchase portable room humidifiers with displays that indicate the humidity level. Rotate these units to attain an even percentage throughout your home. Also, it is important to periodically inspect the appliances in the kitchen and waterlines feeding bathroom fixtures to ensure that there is no water leaking in your home. Water truly is the enemy of hardwood floors.
